Canon announced the launch of the EOS 50D digital SLR camera. With a 15.1 megapixel resolution and the new DIGIC 4 image processor, the EOS 50D delivers extraordinary quality and image control.
The EOS 50D builds upon the success of the ESO 40D by incorporating greater performance and ease of use to enable photographers to do more with their images. More advanced features of the EOS 50D include an expanded ISO range, improved noise reduction, and in-camera photo editing features.
Key Features:
• 15.1 Megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor
• 6.3 fps continuous shooting, max. burst 90 JPEGs/ 17 RAW with UDMA card
• DIGIC 4 processor
• ISO 100-3200, expandable to 12800
• 9-point wide area AF
• Live View mode & Face Detection Live AF, 3.0” Clear View VGA LCD (920K)
• Improved EOS Integrated Cleaning System
• HDMI connection for high quality viewing and playback on a High Definition TV
• Full compatibility with Canon EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlites
Improved image quality
At the heart of the improvements is Canon’s latest DIGIC 4 image processor, which debuts in the EOS 50D. DIGIC 4 offers high speed rendering of fine detail, natural colour reproduction, low noise and greater signal processing speed (1.3 times over DIGIC III).
The increased processing speed of the camera’s DIGIC 4 image processor enables a fast 6.3 frame-per-second (fps) continuous shooting capability (for bursts of up to 90 Large/Fine JPEGs or 17 RAW images on a UDMA CF card), giving photographers the ability to capture moments with split second clarity.
Beyond this, DIGIC 4 also offers additional features that enhance camera performance and image quality, such as real-time face detection AF during Live View shooting, Auto Lighting Enhanced Optimizer (automatically corrects image exposure) and automatic correction of lens vignetting.
Another enhancement is the EOS 50D’s newly-developed APS-C sized CMOS sensor that offers the highest image resolution in its class, at 15.1 megapixels; it also boasts an expanded ISO range from the previous model. It provides ISO speeds from ISO 100 up to ISO 3200 in 1/3-stop increments, along with two high-speed settings - H1 and H2 - of ISO 6400 and ISO 12800, respectively.
Along with a wide ISO range, Canon has created more tools to help maximize image clarity and color. The EOS 50D Digital SLR camera offers multiple levels of noise reduction during high-speed shooting. Users can choose from one of four settings – Standard, Weak, Strong, None - to reduce digital noise that can result from poor lighting conditions.
To cope with the increased data stream of higher image resolution, the EOS 50D is compatible with UDMA (Ultra Direct Memory Access) CF cards which offer twice the data transfer speed over EOS 40D (predecessor model).
Ease of use
The EOS 50D sports an enhanced user interface that makes features more accessible to even advanced users.
Most noticeable is the 3-inch VGA LCD screen, with a screen resolution of 920,000 pixels, four times the resolution of the preceding model. Protected by special coatings to reduce glare and resist smudging, picture review is now much easier and more precise. This is further enhanced by the EOS 50D’s improved Live View shooting mode that affords added convenience by allowing the photographer to compose shots using the in-built LCD screen, similar to using a compact digital camera, or using an external screen when connected to a computer. Live View has been made more convenient and intuitive, with most menu operations and camera settings available while in this mode.
To display captured images to maximum effect, the EOS 50D includes a HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) output for clear and crisp display on High-Definition TVs. The DIGIC 4 processor manages high volumes of image data with ease, supporting UDMA for faster file processing and writing.
The EOS 50D Digital SLR introduces a new “CA” Creative Full Auto setting on the camera’s mode dial to give advanced amateurs more flexibility. Instead of grappling with technical aspects of photography (e.g., exposure compensation or aperture values), photographers can adjust settings categorised by attributes. For example, users can select if they would like the background to be in focus or blurred, or whether the image should be bright or dark, with the camera adjusting automatically to suit.
Two small RAW formats
In addition to the RAW and JPEG image capture modes that photographers are accustomed to, the EOS 50D Digital SLR camera now offers more manageable resolution settings and file sizes with two sRAW (small RAW) recording formats, sRAW1 and sRAW2. At the sRAW1 setting, resolution is 7.1 megapixels with a file size that is approximately 25 percent smaller than a standard 15.1 megapixel RAW image. With the sRAW2 setting, resolution is 3.8 megapixels and less than half the file size of a standard RAW image. This retains the flexibility and creative possibilities associated with RAW format photography, but with variable file sizes.
Improved EOS Integrated Cleaning System
The Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit for the Canon EOS 50D has also been upgraded and now includes a fluorine coating on the low-pass filter for better dust resistance. The Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit uses ultrasonic vibrations to shake dust particles off of the low-pass filter in front of the sensor each time the camera is powered up or shut down. The second part of the system includes a software component where sensor spots are mapped and saved as Dust Delete Data which is then attached to the image file for removal during post processing using Canon’s DPP software.
The New Lens: EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Featuring a tremendous 11x zoom factor, this lens offers the 35mm format equivalent of focal lengths ranging from 29-320mm, which allows the photographer to capture sweeping vistas, extreme close-ups and everything else in between. High image quality at all focal lengths is ensured by the use of UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) and high precision aspherical glass elements. Lens disposition and coatings are optimized to minimise ghosting and flare.
This lens also significantly improves low-light performance with its built-in Image Stabilization, which corrects camera shake to deliver sharp images over a further 4 stops in shutter speed.
