Worthy upgrade
Purchased this to replace the HD-8Z I purchased from ‘Furry Banana Digital’ last year. The old model (HD-8Z) didn’t have an HDMI port and it was a bit of a pain having to connect the component cable for video and the composite cable to get audio through the TV… 4 connections at the TV end in all! HDMI is MUCH easier and neater; just 1 cable for video and audio. Also, HDMI is a completely digital connection from the camcorder to the TV, so picture quality should be the best it can possibly be. The fact that Furry Banana were throwing-in a free HDMI cable in the box and offering free expedited delivery (came within 48-hours of ordering!) made it a ‘no brainer’ for me.

Everything I said in my previous review on the HD-8Z stands for this new model, so I’ve copied and pasted that review below:

Just received one of these and wasn’t expecting much considering the price, but I’m stunned! Picture quality is amazing! Glad I went with 1080p, as there’s a noticeable difference in sharpness between 720p and 1080p modes on my 46″ Sony Bravia LCD TV. The digital image stabiliser is also surpringly effective and it pretty-much essential when at full zoom.
The still camera feature is also excellent. Before I received the camcorder, I assumed the digital still camera feature would be just an ‘after-thought’, but it’s honestly as good as your average digital compact camera and even has some quite advanced features, such as exposure compensation, as well as the usual scene modes and white balance settings, etc. The flash is quite powerful and it’s a PROPER xenon flash and not the usual LED lights, which are useless for taking photos in the dark. The camcorder does have an ultra-bright LED light in addition to the flash, however, and this is useful for recording video at night (even in pitch black conditions if you’re close enough to the subject). The camcorder seems very well put-together and doesn’t feel at all ‘cheap’ or flimsy.

All-in-all, this is a fantastic bit of kit and WELL WORTH the money! Picture quality at 1080p is incredible, even on my 46″ Sony Bravia TV and the still camera feature is an added bonus!
